  • Assistant Professor, Geosciences (posting number: 071015)

    The Department of Geosciences at Virginia Tech is seeking to fill a tenure-track position to start in the fall of 2008 in one of two focus areas:

    1) Sedimentary basin analysis and characterization of fossil fuel resources, with emphasis on the areas of reflection and marine seismology, and high-resolution sequence stratigraphy.

    2) Planetary surface and crustal processes related to dynamics of environmental change, including the areas of geomorphology, Quaternary research, remote sensing of surface processes, surface hydrology, and volcanology/igneous petrology.

    The position is at the assistant professor level, but outstanding senior candidates are encouraged to inquire and apply. Rank will be determined by the qualifications of the successful applicant. To receive full consideration, all applicants must have: a Ph.D. degree in Geosciences or related discipline at the time of appointment; and an active research program or, for new Ph.D.'s, strong promise for developing an active research program.   • Instructor, Geosciences (posting number: 080424)

    The Department of Geosciences at Virginia Tech seeks applicants for the position of Instructor to begin Fall Semester 2008. Principal duties include teaching multiple lecture sections of two introductory-level Geosciences courses:

    1) Physical Geology

    2) Resources and the Environment

    If qualified, the successful applicant may also become involved in teaching lecture and/or lab components of upper-level majors' courses. The normal course load for this position would be four or five lecture sections per academic year; summer school teaching for supplemental salary may also be available. Salary will depend on seniority and qualifications, but is expected to be in the range of $35,000 to $45,000. To receive full consideration, applicants must have a Master's degree in Geology or related area (Ph.D. in Geology preferred) and should also have some experience in teaching large introductory class sections of Physical, Resources, or Environmental Geology.
